Miss America
Why are there never any red heads in the Miss America pageant?
I just watched the 2010 Miss America pageant tonight and I seriously didn't see one red head, and now that I've been thinking about it, I don't remember ever seeing very many red heads at all in the pageants over the years. Has anyone noticed that too?
Part of the reason lies in the fact that NATURAL redheads are a relatively uncommon lot. Some estimates claim that only 4% (or even less) of the world's population has red or auburn hair. Next time you see a crowd of at least 50 people altogether, look for redheads. How many do you see? Not many, if any! (And some of the ones you do see are dyed.)
Another reason lies in the Western culture's beauty standards, which includes an avoidance of pale skin. Many (though not all) redheads also carry a gene mutation which gives them pale, freckling skin. It makes it difficult to tan, since exposure to sun generally causes freckling while still leaving the skin mostly pale. Freckles themselves are scorned by some people as being unlovely.
If the first statistic is correct, then in a pool of 50 randomly-selected contestants, you could only expect to see about 2 redheaded contestants at most. Factor in the points about whether the local and state level judges believed the redheaded (and presumably pale-skinned, freckled) contestants to be superior to the evenly-tanned brunettes and blondes, and it's no longer a surprise that few redheads appear in the competition.
Besides, as someone else already pointed out, we redheads have better things to do than stand around in a beauty pageant! We're too busy manipulating our social groups and excelling in our fields.

All About Miss Arizona Pageant
The state of Arizona, when it comes to beauty contests, is not really as popular as the 'showbiz' states of California and New York. But while Arizona has not yet won a Miss USA title in its own right, it does not mean that there is something wrong about how the state picks its beauty queens and the state is not at all interested in correcting whatever the mistake in that system is. Actually, although it may not show, Arizona is quite energetic when it comes to beauty pageants as well. Arizona has earned a couple of high placings in the said competition as well as some special awards. If there is really something wrong about what Arizona follows when picking representatives for beauty competitions, that system has done good things too. Judging by the awards the products of the Miss Arizona pageant has received through the years, it can be argued that the system is very skilled in terms of training ladies on how to properly wear a state costume and smile for the camera as well as in teaching the importance of establishing friendships during the competition. These are of course, 'unconventional' but it has really done good in giving Arizona some honor when it comes to beauty contests.
Arizona has never represented the USA in the Miss Universe pageant; sadly, the state has little to do when it comes to the said prestigious competition. As said, it has not win a Miss USA title yet and thus, has not experienced gracing the Miss universe stage ever as well. But for the most part, despite the fact that Arizona does not really pay that much attention to its beauty queens as much as it gives importance to its cultural tourism sector, these ladies are still able to bag some distinctions for the state, at least in the Miss America pageant.
